Whether you're new to scuba diving or you've had ear problems when diving in the past, it's important to learn how to protect your eardrums from perforation. When you scuba dive, your body is subject to higher pressure levels than normal. This can cause barotrauma (high-pressure injury) to the ears, tearing the eardrums. Small eardrum perforations often heal on their own, but they can be very painful and some may require ear surgery to fix.
